DIHP: a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) according to the European REACH Regulation

Edited on 01/13/2020
Résumé:
DiIsoHexyl Phthalate (DIHP - CAS No. 71850-09-4) has been added to the candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) for authorisation due to its reproductive toxicity.
Description:

DiIsoHexyl phthalate (DIHP - CAS No: 71850-09-4) has been identified on 16/01/2020 as a Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) due to its reproductive toxicity.
This decision results in its addition to the candidate list for inclusion on Annex XIV of the REACH regulation. This annex lists the substances for which authorisation is required in order to place them on the European Union market (regarding uses targeted by the REACH Regulation).
This decision further implies that any supplier of articles containing DIHP at a concentration higher than 0,1 % (w/w) has communication obligations towards customers down the supply chain and to consumers.
DIHP can be used for the production of inks, paints and sealants (it is not used for the production of PVC because it is too volatile). It should be noted that this substance has not been produced in Europe since 2010 and that it is unlikely to be imported into the European Union since 2011.
