REACH introduces, among other instruments, the authorisation regime for substances of very high concern (SVHC) that are listed on Annex XIV of the regulation. Its aim is to guide economic actors towards their gradual substitution, in order to, ultimately, ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment.
Authorisation is granted for a transitional period during which users of these substances must seek safer alternatives. The application for authorisation therefore includes an analysis of the alternatives with a study of the technical and economic feasibility and a review of the associated risks.
ECHA offers an online training course on the analysis of alternatives to hazardous substances consisting of an introduction and five sessions:
- Scoping your assessment
- Identifying and screening alternatives
- Hazard and exposure
- Cost and technical performance
- Making and implementing decisions
