Ineris has published a report (in French) providing an overview of PFAS uses and identified alternatives, based on recent work carried out at European and international level. Covering a wide scope (18 sectors, 80 sub-uses, nearly 270 applications and more than 1,600 substances), it highlights the main functions performed by PFAS and the substitute solutions already available.
Aimed at decision-makers, manufacturers and researchers, it is a tool to support the transition towards a gradual reduction in the use of PFAS in Europe. The report is supplemented by an Excel database from the Horizon 2020 ZeroPM project, listing uses and associated alternatives (English version of the database : https://zeropm.eu/alternative-assessment-database/).
1 ZeroPM is a European Research project that will interlink prevention, prioritization and removal strategies to protect the environment and human health from persistent, mobile and toxic substances.
